Leisure

Vechta offers many leisure activities for a good work-study-life balance. Active people can discover various cycling and hiking trails, the nearby lake Dümmer or the high-moor areas of the region. The city of Vechta itself has about 200 associations with various profiles, 50 of which are sports clubs offering many disciplines, from amateur to individual sports.

For those interested in history and culture, the surrounding area offers many museums. The Museum im Zeughaus on the historic citadel grounds provides insights into Vechta’s past as a fortress town on 1,000 m² and presents the topic “Experimentelles Mittelalter” (experimental Middle Ages) in an interactive manner, for example in the context of the Castrum Vechtense project. The Industrie Museum Lohne (industrial museum) is also nearby. In any case, cultural events are “daily business” in Vechta: open-air concerts, art and opera performances in the JVA für Frauen (women’s prison), theatre or literary events contribute to a broad programme.

Last but not least, every August, Vechta is the venue for the Stoppelmarkt, which has been held for over 700 years and is one of the largest fairs in northwest Germany.
