Service learning is a form of "learning through engagement" and combines learning in the context of a seminar or school lessons (learning) with support for a partner institution (service). Students carry out a self-organized project for a partner institution (e.g. a non-governmental organisation, a local administration, an educational institution, etc.). The project is intended to meet a practice partner's need and/or solve a particular problem while the students gain knowledge and develop their skills. A process of mutual learning and the reciprocal integration of practical knowledge and academic knowledge should develop between those providing the support and those receiving it.
A service learning project includes the definition of the task, planning, implementation and evaluation. All steps must be carried out by the students in cooperation with their partner institution. Lecturers usually arrange the cooperation beforehand, help students to link their practical projects to academic discourses, take on a councelling role and encourage students to reflect on their projekt. In the end, students receive credit points on e.g. a presentation, a project report or a portfolio.
Service Learning has gained significance at German universities since the 2000s and is increasingly perceived and applied as a method for education for sustainable development (ESD) in recent years. With this form of teaching and learning, the university establishes and strengthens partnerships in the region and contributes to the exchange of knowledge between science and society. By service learning the university contributes to regional development and offers students insights into partner organizations, professional fields and volunteering opportunities.
At University of Vechta, service learning is offered in various subjects and modules as well as in the cross-curricular field.
