Coming to Vechta
We support you on your way to the University of Vechta and during your studies.

Study in Germany: Step by Step!

Applying to study in Vechta is very easy. Here we explain step by step how to do it.

Please note: Various agencies offer fee-based (and often overpriced) support for applying to study in Germany. We advise against using these services.

We are happy to support you with your application (and as a state university, of course, free of charge) and answer your questions - just contact us!

Step 1: Choose your degree programme

Social work or educational science, management of social services or gerontology, transformation management or cultural studies, teacher training and much more - in the range of study programmes at the University of Vechta you will find the right degree programme (Bachelor's / Master's) for your studies in Germany and for your career!

Step 2: Clarify the entry requirements

We provide personalised and individual advice. Therefore, you can have it clarified in advance, i.e. before applying for a study programme, whether you fulfil the admission requirements.

Simply send us your desired study programme and your school certificates (or your Bachelor's certificate for a Master's programme) in German or English by email or (if you are already in Germany) arrange a personal consultation appointment!

By doing so, you will find out at an early stage whether admission is possible and can plan your next steps.

Step 3: Learn German and obtain a language certificate

To be admitted to the degree programme, you need a German language certificate for university admission (e.g. TestDaF, Telc C1 Hochschule, DSH-2 or the Goethe Zertifikat C2).

If you already have C1 level knowledge (e.g. proven by attending a C1 course), you can be admitted on condition that you submit the language certificate in the first semester.

We offer preparatory German language courses for prospective students.

Step 4: Apply for a study programme

Submit your application for a study programme directly via the online application portal of the University of Vechta. The application portal opens for the winter semester at the beginning of June.

If your documents are not in German or English, you will need translations for your application.

The application deadline for most degree programmes is 30 September. However, we recommend that you apply early so that you have enough time before the start of the semester to address questions about visas, funding, finding accommodation, etc.

Step 5: Apply for a visa (if required)

If you need a visa to enter Germany, it is best to make an appointment with the relevant embassy as early as possible. As a rule, in order to obtain a visa you will need, in particular, admission from the university and proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses in Germany (e.g. proof of a blocked account or proof of a scholarship). The embassies and consulates publish the exact details on their websites.

Step 6: Plan your start into the degree programme

Whether you have questions regarding accommodation, health insurance, enrolment at the university, organisation of your studies, searching for part-time jobs or applying for the "Deutschlandstipendium" scholarship - the team of the International Office has a lot of information available, will be happy to advise you and organises numerous support services.

Do you need to attend a Studienkolleg (one-year preparatory course) before starting your degree programme? For certain target groups, we offer an alternative to the Studienkolleg that provides access to a degree programme in Vechta. Please feel free to contact us!

Information on scholarships can be found in the DAAD scholarship database.

Students of the University of Vechta can apply for the scholarship "Deutschlandstipendium" .

For students with certain residence permits (e.g. refugees), it is also possible to apply for BAföG.

In Germany, international students (who are not EU citizens) are allowed to work without a work permit for a total of 120 days or 240 half days per year. If you are looking for a part-time job to finance your studies, the International Office will be happy to support you as part of the FIT programme.

Applicants from China, Vietnam and India must also submit an APS certificate with their application.

Here you will find further information for refugees (e.g. on various offers or options for certificates lost due to flight).

For international teachers who would like to work as teachers in Germany, the University of Vechta offers the "Back to School" programme and the adaptation course. Find out more here!

The University of Vechta endeavours to enable students with disabilities or chronic illnesses to participate equally and independently in their studies and student life. Numerous information and counselling services are available.
