Tallinn was granted city rights by the Danish King in the 13th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Since its founding, various world powers have been coming and going – from the Danes and the Swedes to the Germans as well as Tsarist and Soviet Russia.
Around 430,000 of 1.3 million Estonians are living in the capital. Today, it is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe and is full of magic charm. With its pointed church towers, narrow old town streets and coarse cobblestones, with an old city wall and the graceful domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn is perfect for a pleasant stroll.
The best time to experience Tallinn in a very special atmosphere is the wintertime. The Old Town is wonderfully illuminated, there are medieval stands and if you are lucky, the city is covered with snow.
Today, Tallinn is among the digital pioneers in the world and has the highest number of start-upsper person in Europe.
A trip to Tallinn can be combined with a side trip to Helsinki in Finland. There are regular ferries between the ports, allowing you to cross the Baltic Sea within 2.5 hours.
