The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz)

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano was founded in 1997 and is located in one of the most fascinating regions in Europe, at the crossroads between the German-speaking and the Italian cultural and economic area. The trilingualism (German, Italian and Ladin)in teaching and research, the high level of internationalisation as well as an ideal study environment and excellent equipment are some of the reasons why unibz regularly reaches top positions in national and international rankings.

The second campus of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is situated in the town of Brixen-Bressanone. The Faculty of Education and the associated University Library are situated in the historic town centre.

The Master’s degree programmePrimary Education is divided into three sections according to the language of instruction: one in German, one in Italian and one in Ladin.

The programme is characterised by a strong practical orientation and optimal supervision. In laboratories in small groups and in the EduSpaces (Lernwerkstatt (learning workshop), Multilab and Sprachlabor (language lab)), students learn to put the study contents into practice and develop innovative pedagogical/didactic concepts.

Special attention is paid to preparing for the future linguistically and culturally heterogeneous kindergarten and school realities, as well as to closely involving families and taking into account the specific conditions of South Tyrol.

Brixen-Bressanone, a former bishop’s seat, is characterised by its mediaeval Gothic architecture, where you can still breathe the atmosphere of an academic, theological tradition that has lasted for centuries. A branch of the University of Padua is situated here as well. Like Bozen-Bolzano, Brixen-Bressanone has always been a crossroads of different cultures.

Since the end of the World War II, Brixen-Bressanone has experienced a spurt in economic growth while consolidating its artistic and cultural vocation. Students who come to study here will enjoy the advantages of a small town of about 18,000 inhabitants, where traffic is not too busy.

The mediaeval alleys and the historical flair are an ideal starting point for excursions into the countryside and for practising a whole variety of sports and leisure activities. Leaving directly from the town centre, students can go for a bicycle tour or hike in the surrounding hills and mountains. A good example of a fine place for hiking and biking is the Plose ski area, which is easily accessible by public transport and which in the winter months is a popular´ area for skiing and snowboarding.
